In this two-part series on Quality Measures, we dive deeper into the short-stay and long-stay quality measures, where CMS collects this data, and how to use a CASPER report to determine the next steps in improving quality measure scores. In the first part, we take a look at the short-stay quality measures, the MDS data that drives them, and the exclusions and covariates involved.
“What generates your quality measures?” asks Parkhurst. “We think that just the MDS drives those, but the reality of it is, CMS utilizes the patient-specific MDS data submitted to calculate many of the QI measures they monitor, but it’s also important to realize that the Medicare claims and submissions to the CDC are also utilized to calculate some of those CMS quality measures.”
